The Trebuchet is the standard Artillery Weapon of the Medieval Age Medieval Age, available to upgrade from the Catapult and built at the Siege Factory.

Overview[]

After Catapults become Trebuchets, they gain +20 hit points, +6 attack strength, +1 attack range, +2 movement speed, and +2 Line of Sight, but lose -10 attack speed. Its projectiles go slightly slower than those of the Catapult (projectile speed of 80 instead of 85), and go through a higher trajectory given the nature of the weapon, but are more accurate. As artillery, the Trebuchet excels at taking down buildings and conquering cities, and it outranges all Towers and Forts.

However, the Trebuchet is extremely vulnerable, as it requires to be deployed and undeployed to shoot and move respectively, and even though it's capable of hitting units, its projectile speed is remarkably slow, the projectiles themselves, though better than before, are still inaccurate, and cannot even shoot its most menacing foe: Units within melee range. The only units a Trebuchet can realistically target and counter are enemy artillery (usually other Trebuchets), and static or slow-moving targets on the larger side, like ships and Supply Wagons.

Keep in mind that artillery units require a nearby Supply Wagon or The Despot/Monarch/Comrade Patriot to operate at full efficiency — without supply artillery reloads and fires only at half the normal rate (2/3 of the normal rate for Catapults and Trebuchets).

Notes[]

  1. The game files indicate this requirement to build Trebuchets, although it's normally needed to build the Siege Factory in the first place, so this requirement is redundant under normal game rules. However, in games with non-standard age settings (such as in the Entire World Conquer the World campaign) this prerequisite can scale. For example, a game beginning in Classical Age and ending in Medieval Age will require Military 2 to build a Siege Factory, but Military 4 to research a Trebuchet. Another exception would be if a scenario granted the player control of a Siege Factory beforehand, as Catapults could theoretically could be built before reaching it.
