The Gunpowder Age Gunpowder Age Large is the fourth age a player can reach in Rise of Nations. It can be obtained by researching 10 more technologies through the Library, and paying 600 food, and 600 knowledge.

Description Edit

The Gunpowder Age is a period in human history which corresponds with the Renaissance period in Europe (lasting from the 14th to 17th centuries). Many great artists like Leonardo Da Vinci left their mark upon history in this era. It is also the time when scientific advancements took place, and one of the worlds most greatest and deadliest inventions- gunpowder- was invented. The invention of gunpowder and cannon revolutionized warfare and added new strategy and depth to military conquests.

This age also saw the expansion of the world as European nations began to set out and colonize new continents. Spain was a pivotal player in removing the Native American tribes from Central and parts of Southern America, creating the Spanish Empire which would endure until the Napoleonic Wars. England also began exploration and colonization of it's own, settling throughout eastern North America. Another notable figure of this era was Christopher Columbus who was credited for the discovery of America.

This era in history also saw the reign of the French Louis XIV, who was a key proponent of absolute monarchy. He was emulated in this regard by Peter the Great in Russia, who began a long history of efforts to modernize the country.

The Gunpowder Age also saw the height of the Ottoman Empire, which after conquering the Byzantine Empire's capital of Constantinople continued a military campaign through the Balkans using elite soldiers known as janissaries. At its zenith the Ottoman Empire under the command of Suleiman the Magnificent reached as far as Vienna.

Advancements Edit

After advancing to the Gunpowder Age, players are given a new palette of buildings to build, technologies to research, and units to create. Unique units and generals come into play as fireams start to dominate the battlefield. In particular, the Elite Javelineer is replaced by the Arquebusier, while the Trebuchet upgrades into the Bombard. Unique in the tech advancement tree, the Crossbowmen of the Medieval Age do not upgrade in the Gunpowder Age. The second tier of government choices is unlocked, with players choosing between Monarchy and Democracy.
