Fire Ships are a class of ships available from the Classical Age to the Enlightenment Age. They explode on contact with enemy ships, dealing massive damage or even destroying enemy vessels. Fire ships are effective against Heavy Ships and Bombardment Ships, but usually get destroyed when encountering Light Ships.

In the Industrial Age, Fire Ships are upgraded to and replaced by Submarines. Submarines no longer explode on impact and stay hidden from enemy sight unless a detector unit spots them.

The Germans built Fire Ships and Submarines 33% faster and 25% cheaper.

Modding Edit

Fire Ships are often considered to be one of the more annoying and unbalanced units in the game, as a two or three of these ships can destroy an entire fleet without too much effort, making naval warfare somewhat tedious. However, there are ways to tone them down a bit or to even remove them from the game.

Making Fire Ships slower Edit

This modifies Fire Ships and reduces their movement speed, while also making them more realistic. Slower Fire Ships will still be very effective, but they have to be used in larger numbers - single Fire Ships are much less devastating.

This requires to edit the file unitrules.xml file using a text or XML editor. The file is located in the game's installation directory, by default it should be something like

  • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Rise of Nations\Thrones and Patriots\data\unitrules.xml (if using the expansion)
  • C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Rise of Nations\data\unitrules.xml (without expansion installed).
  1. In the editor, find the line <NAME>Fire Raft</NAME>. Following this line is the all the data for the first Fire Ship, the Fire Raft. Following the Fire Raft's data set are the other three Fire Ship data sets.
  2. Find the entry <MOVES>??</MOVES> in each data set and deduct something like 10 or 15 from the numerical value (for the Fire Raft replace the 38 with something like 28 or 23).
  3. The slow speed can even be compensated by making Fire Ships stronger by increasing the <ATTACK>??</ATTACK> value.

Note, that this won't work if you are intending to play multiplayer games, unless every player uses the same modified file.

Removing Fire Ships from the game Edit

This is much easier and also safe for multiplayer games. However, keep in mind that by removing Fire Ships you will remove the default counter unit to both Heavy Ships and Bombardment Ships. Submarines are not affected by this.

The safest way to remove units is by creating a script that disables them. To create a script, first navigate to the game's installation directory, e.g. \Rise of Nations\Thrones and Patriots\scenario\Scripts. Now create a file named something like no_fireships.bhs (the file extension is required to be ".bhs"). Open the file with a text editor. Copy the following content into the file:

Save the file and run the game. Start a singleplayer Quick Battle or Multiplayer Game. In the upper right panel, select Game Rules: Custom, this will unlock the lower right panel. Select Script: no_fireships.bhs. Start the game. After starting the game, a message should appear "Fire Ships have been disabled".
