The Cannon is the standard Artillery Unit of the Enlightenment Age, available to upgrade from the Bombard once Military 4 (Conscription) is researched, and are built at the Siege Factory.
Overview[]
After Bombards becomes Cannons, they gain +23 hit points, +6 attack strength, +1 attack range, +2 movement speed and +2 line of sight.
The Cannon, like all other siege, artillery and bombardment units, is used to effectively take out enemy buildings from a safe distance and to bring down a city's defenses, so Infantry and Cavalry units may capture it. The Cannon outranges all defensive structures, including all upgrades of Forts and Towers. It is also somewhat effective in attacking enemy artillery and slow-moving ships. However, despite it's ability to deal splash damage, it's pretty useless against other units or even crowds.
While the Cannon moves and deploys slightly faster than it's predecessors, it is still very slow, making it an easy prey for fast-moving units like Ranged Cavalry.
Keep in mind that siege and artillery units require a nearby Supply Wagon or a The Despot/Monarch/Comrade Patriot to operate at full efficiency — without supply modern artillery reloads and fires only at half rate.
Unique units[]
- The Inca build Mortar instead of Cannon.
- The Turks build Basilica Cannon instead of Cannon.
